Review: Tom's of Maine Natural Deodorant

I like to smell nice, who doesn't? However, I've been concerned for some time about the ingredients in regular antiperspirant/deodorant. Just the way that antiperspirant makes my underarms feel let's me know that it's not "right". So in my quest for an all-natural alternative, I came across Tom's of Maine. I already really liked their toothpaste, so I decided to give it a try.

Now of course it's simply a deodorant and not an antiperspirant, but really, unless you have an actual medical condition that causes excess sweating - normal sweating is, well, normal. So I wasn't concerned about that.

Unfortunately -- no matter how much of that stuff I slathered on my poor little underarms, by the end of the day, I smelled like I had just returned from a long day of playing softball, or construction, or really anything that makes you smell REALLY BAD.

So I'm giving Tom's a big thumbs down....

And just so I don't end this post on a real downer -- I'll let you know what I found that did work. Salt crystal deodorant (Google it). Doesn't even seem to matter what brand. Cool eh?

I agree Tom's doesnt work!! The only truly organic deodorant that works is Lafe's Natural BodyCare's deodorant. The roll-on is my fave and it comes in 5 scents and an unscented. The spray also works great. Check out their website at www.lafes.com . If it works do a product review on that so people can get truly effective and organic deodorant.

I think I am lucky. I can pretty much work out hard, run, jump, do whatever and I barely sweat under my arms. I will even do the sniff test and smell pretty much nothing. I have no idea if this is good or bad, but I am thankful. I do use deodorant some of the time but I often forget. =/

John, I would LOVE to try that out! I'll check out the site :-).

Sandi - that's awesome, and I think it has something to do with eating habits? I eat alot of garlic, lol, maybe that's what does it.

And thanks for the kind words Sandradb!

Ok, I looked at the www.lafes.com site... awesome stuff... and it's made with mineral salts. I would be positive it would work, it seems that anything with salt works like a charm!

I tried Tom's and it made me break out in a rash under my arms. I walked around with my arms out like Frankenstein's monster for a week. However, my skin is weird because I can't always tell ahead of time what my skin will react to or not. So your results may vary from mine.

Good to know. I had the same problem with Jason products. I still have Yoga clothes that smell like sweat. I like the crystals, but unless you get the spray kind, the crystals leave crystallization bits around the medicine cabinet. Any thoughts on how to prevent that?

Hmmm... I don't know, the crystal stick I use has a cap, so it doesn't leave anything in my medicine cabinet. :-)

I will say that if Lafe's wants to send me a stick, I'll happily review it... :P

I'm glad I"m not the only one who thinks Tom's doesn't work.

Tom's mouthwash is awful too :P

I went back to Dove after much trial and error.

Anok, LOL! Yep, I personally like their toothpaste, but that's about it.

I used Tom's during my radiation treatments as it doesn't have metals in it and is okay to use during breast radiation. But it's as you say, it just doesn't work too well. I was glad to be able to use "something" though so it does have it uses. I'm happy now to be able to use regualr deodorant again.

Check out these great deals!
