Almay Mascara Review - Allergy Alert

Almay - not an "all natural" company, but a company well-known for its hypoallergenic cosmetics. Anytime I have had an allergy issue with a makeup, I've turned to Almay for a replacement; but apparently that ship has sailed...

A few months ago, everytime I wore my Almay mascara, my lower eyelid would swell and hurt. I didn't make the connection at first, but then I decided to switch mascaras and lo and behold, the swelling and hurting stopped! I was baffled of course, it's ALMAY! Chalking it up to my weird physiology, I just threw it out and didn't think anything of it. A few days ago, I happened to mention it to my mom and she looked at me and said, "Did you say Almay? I had an allergic reaction to Almay mascara just a few months ago."

In light of the fact that both of us had reactions - I thought I would post this and see if anyone else has had an odd reaction to Almay... because if my mom hadn't mentioned her reaction, I would have just thought it was just me. (score one for the all natural-bat-poo-free mascara companies, lol)

Just popping back in to see the changes - looks good!

By the way, you can have reactions to all natural and hypoallergenic products just the same as regular products. It just depends on what you're intolerant to.

I honestly recommend Mary Kay cosmetics for a lot of reasons, but one is that they are almost all water based products (which cuts down on reactions) and they are not tested on animals.

Although any mascara product can cause irritation to your eyes if you get them in your eyes. It's the nature of the beast!

Lookin' good.

Thanks for coming back, Anok! I didn't know that about Mary Kay, that's really cool :-)...

I've gotten mascara in my eyes before - NOT FUN! ;)

I also usually depend on Almay because of cosmetic allergies, but recently I am having major eye troubles. I haven't isolated it as the mascara yet. In fact, I thought it might be the liquid liner. I seem to be okay with the just the black/brown mascara, but when I use the "eye color coded" stuff, with the liquid liner, shadow and colored mascara for blue or green eyes, I end up all red an puffy. The products for blue are worse than the green for some reason. I am really bummed, since I like the colors a lot. But you are not the only one having a reaction. BTW, I bought these products right at the end of October, so maybe something new is going on?

Jennifer, that is exactly the Almay Mascara I have... the kind to highlight certain colors! Don't remember which color though.

And I bought it around Sept or Oct. There is definitely something new going on because Almay has never bothered me before.

Yep, same problem here! Red,puffy and gunky eyes after wearing the 'intense i-color' mascara and eyeliner for brown eyes. I am thinking it's probably the mascara, of the two. I hadn't worn mascara for years because of allergies *although I never had this much irritation before!*, and I thought Almay would, of course, be a safe product. A real disappointment I have to say.
I probably bought mine about the same time you all mentioned buying yours, October/November '08. I really hope they address this issue!

Yep - I think maybe there was a bad batch or something. And when I went to look at them at the store - although I have blue eyes, I'm pretty sure I chose the one for brown because I liked the color combo's better.

Check out these great deals!
